Captain's Day victory for Norman Nicholl

There was a very good turn-out of golfers for Mr. Brian Watt's Captain's Day at Galgorm Castle Golf Club. The day started showery but as it progressed bright periods with sunshine appeared. There were plenty of prizes to be won for the golfers – Captain's Prize, Runner-up – winner and runner-up in each section – longest drive – nearest the pin – Gross prize – seniors prize – best Front 9 – best Back 9.- Ladies Prize Section 1 – Ladies Prize Section 2. Thanks go to the Captain Mr. Brian Watt and all who helped for a most enjoyable and entertaining day.

 

Division 1

There was a very close finish to this Division. At halfway seven handicapper Wilson McVeigh held a slender one point advantage over Kaeden Anderson playing off three. Billy Cull (7) ('ding' at Spences) was another two points behind. Through The Maple McVeigh and Anderson were vying for the lead two points ahead of Cull. Up the Grove, ,Anderson, after three pars, was leading by two points from McVeigh ('ding' at Devils Elbow) with Cull another point behind after a par at Devils Elbow, a bogey over Beechers and a bogey at the Grove. Anderson finished with a bogey down Lowlands and a par at Shirleys Cottage to win by one point from McVeigh (bogey at Lowlands and a par at eighteen) and Cull (pars at the Lowlands and Shirleys Cottage). Second place went to Cull with a better back nine.

Patrick Dallat (-2) won the Gross with 37 Gr. Pts.

Division 2

After the Front 9 Norman Nicholl (12) was leading by two points from George Kernohan (11) ('ding' at The Treasury) and Keith Padgett (9). Neville Neill was another point behind. Approaching Devils Elbow Nicholl ('ding' at The Fort) was two points ahead of Neill followed by Kernohan and Padgett (both players had a 'ding' at Arthurs Seat) another point behind. Through the Grove Nicholl was three points clear of Kernohan after both players recorded a par at Devils Elbow and another over Beechers followed by a bogey up the Grove. Neill (bogey, double bogey, par) was another point behind with Padgett (bogey, par, double bogey) two further points back. Nicholl finished with two pars to WIN OVERALL the Captain's Prize. Five points behind came Kernohan (bogey at Lowlands and a bogey at Shirleys Cottage) to Win Division 2 by a point from Padgett (two pars) in second place. Neill (bogey, double bogey) finished a point outside the placings.

Division 3

Through the Front 9 David Stirling (16) was leading by one point but being hard pressed for the lead by Aidan McCafferty (13) (opened with a 'ding'), Harry Cook (17) and Connor White (17) ('ding' at The Niuc). Approachimg Beechers McCafferty and White were the new joint leaders three points clear of Stirling ('ding' at Piat). Cook ('ding' at The Fort) was another point behind. After a bogey at Beechers and a birdie at the Grove McCafferty was three points clear from White (bogey, double bogey). Stirling (par, bogey) was another point behind followed by Cook (two bogeys) a further two points down. McCafferty won the Division by three points after a bogey , double bogey finish. Cook finished strongly with two pars in second place. White (two double bogeys) and Stirling (bogey, double bogey) returned a point outside the placings.

Robin Deane (18) won the Seniors with 38 Pts. (BB9).

Division 4

Coming to the Back 9 Brian Mitchell (23) was leading by a slender one point from Robert Artt (22) and Conor Doherty (24) with Keith Wylie (23) ('dings' Lillyvale and The Niuc) another two points behind. After The Maple Mitchell and Doherty were vying for the lead a point ahead of Artt. Wylie was another point behind. Artt after a bogey at the Devils Elbow and a par at Beechers joined Mitchell (two bogeys) in the lead with Doherty (bogey, double bogey) and Wylie (bogey, par) close up a point behind. Mitchell bogeyed the Grove and the Lowlands and finished with a par at Shirleys Cottage to Win the OVERALL RUNNER-UP placing. In a thrilling finish three points behind for the Division placings came Artt ('ding' at the Grove, bogey at the Lowlands, par at Shirleys Cottage), Doherty (two bogeys and a double bogey) and Wylie (par and two double bogeys). Wylie won the Division with a better back nine. In second place with a better last six came Artt.
