Charity Day win for M.Fitzgerald

There was a good turn out of golfers fo0r Galgorm Castle's Captain's Charity Day Stableford competition sponsored by Ballyprint. The finish turned out to be very close and exciting as only two points separated five players – Matthew Fitzgerald; Sean McCormick; David Halliday; Gary McWilliams and Paul Steenson.

 

Division 1

At halfway Sean McCormick, playing off a handicap of four, was leading by three points from David Halliday (9). Danny McConaghie (9) ('ding' at The Treasury) was another two points behind. John Punnoose ('6), Jacob Logan (5) ('ding' at The Niuc) and Cole Anderson (Scr) ('ding' at The Treasury) were a further one, two and four points respectively back At the Devils Elbow McComick had increased his lead to six points over Halliday. Punnoose was another point behind. McConaghie and Henderson were two further points down followed by Logan two more points back. Up the Grove McCormick, after pars at Devils Elbow, Beechers and the Grove, was proving difficult to overtake and held a four point lead over Punnoose (birdie at Devils Elbow, par at Beechers followed by another birdie up the Grove) Halliday (birdie at Devils Elbow, par at Beechers and a bogey at the Grove) was another point behind. McConaghie (par, bogey, birdie), (Logan (birdie, par, birdie) and Henderson (birdie and two pars) were three more points further behind with two holes to play. McCormick bogeyed Lowlands and failed to score at Shirleys Cottage but held on by a point from Halliday (par at Lowlands and a bogey finish) to WIN the OVERALL RUNNER-UP placing Halliday WON Division 1 by two points from Pennoose (par at Lowlands 'ding' at Shirleys Cottage) and McConaghie (pars at Lowlands and Shirleys Cottage). Second place went to Punnoose with a better back nine. Logan (par at Lowlands and a birdie to finish) and Henderson (pars at Lowlands and Shirleys Cottage) were one and two points outside the placings.

Division 2

Through Longlands Gary Wilkins (12) had a three point advantage over Paul Steenson (10), Trev0or Fletcher (12), Gary Jackson (10) and Lyle Foster (11). Gary McWilliams (13) was another point behind and Aidan McCafferty (13) ('dings' at Trout Hole and Longlands a further four points down. Approaching the Devils Elbow Steenson and McWilliams had improved and were only one and two points respectively behind Wilkins. Jackson was another point back. Fletcher and Foster were a further point behind and McCafferty was three more points down. At the Grove McWilliams, after pars at Devils Elbow, Beechers and the Grove, was the new leader by a point from Wilkins (bogeys at Devils Elbow, Beechers and the Grove) and Foster (pars at Devils Elbow and Beechers and a birdie up the |Grove). Steenson (par at Devils Elbow, 'ding' at Beechers, par at the Grove) and Jackson (par at Devils Elbow, birdie over Beechers and a bogey and a bogey at the Grove) were close up another point behind Fletcher after a bogey at Devils Elbow followed by two pars was a further point down and McCafferty (two pars and a birdie at the Grove) was another point back. McWilliams bogeyed Lowlands qand parred Shirleys Cottage and was joined at the finish by Steenson with a par at Lowlands and a birdie at Shirleys Cottage. McWilliams WON Division 2 with a better back nine. Foster (double bogey at Lowlands and a par at Shirleys Cottage) was another two points back and WON the Seniors. McCafferty improved with two pars to take third place another point behind. Wilkins (double bogey, 'dingt'), Fletcher (two bogeys) and Jackson (double bogey, bogey) finished a point outside the placings.

 

Division 3

At The Fort William Rainey (17) ('ding' at Broadmeadows), David Gault (16) (opened with a 'ding') and Jonny McIlroy (14) ('ding at Lillyvale) were vying for the lead a point ahead of D.J.Martin (18). At The Maple Rainey was leading by a point from McIlroy with Martin and Gault ('ding' at Piat) another point behind. Up the Grove Martin with a bogey at Devils Elbow, par at Beechers and a bogey at the Grove had taken a one point lead over Rainey ('ding' at Devils Elbow, par at Beechers and a doble bogey at the Grove) and McIlroy (bogeys at Devils Elbow, Beechers and the Grove). Gault (par at Devils Elbow, bogey at Beechers, 'ding' at the Grove) was another point behind. In a close finish Rainey with pars at Lowlands and Shirleys Cottage WON by one point from Martin (par at Lowlands double bogey at Shirleys Cottage). Another point behind Gault (bogey at Lowlands and a par at Shirleys Cottage) and McIIlroy (par at Lowlands and a double bogey to finish) returned the same score and with a better last six third place was taken by Gault.

Division 4

Entering the Back 9 Matthew Fitzgerald (32) ('ding' at Trout Hole was two points clear of Jonathan McCullough (21). John Bell (30) ('ding' at The Treasury) was another three points behind and James Campbell ('dings' at the Trout Hole, The Niuc and Walkers Home a further four points down. At the Devils Elbow Fitzgerald had increased his lead to six points over McCullough ('ding' at the Piat) with Bell closing to within a point of McCullough. Three points further back came Campbell. Through the Grove Fitzgerald (bogey at Devils Elbow, double bogeys at Beechers and the Grove) was seven points clear of Bell (double bogey at Devils Elbow, bogey over Beechers and double bogey at the Grove) and McCullough (bogeys at Devils Elbow and Beechers and a double bogey at the Grove). Campbell (double bogey at Devils Elbow, par at Beechers and a bogey at the Grove) was another two points behind. Fitzgerald finished with a triple bogey down Lowlands and a 'ding' at Shirleys Cottage to WIN OVERALL There was'also a very close finish for the Division placings between Bell (bogey, triple bogey); McCullough (double bogey par) and Campbell two bogeys) and with a better back nine Campbell WON the Division. Bell came second with a better back nine and McCullough third.
